How much will we have to pay for electricity and gas in Hungary?
Energy prices have gone out of control, which the average citizen here in Hungary has not felt so much because of the overheads cuts. Ever since it was revealed that the government will cut even the cuts themselves (i.e. overhead prices will go up), all sorts of scare stories and pictures have been circulating on the internet about how much we will have to pay for electricity and gas.
Blikk.hu looked at how much electricity and gas would cost in Germany if we were to move there right now and sign a contract with a service provider, based on average Hungarian consumption.
Electricity
The average annual electricity consumption in Hungary is 2523 kWh, or 210 kWh per month. For this, Hungarian consumers now pay HUF 7750 (EUR 19.47) per month, or HUF 93,000 (EUR 233.67) per year, with a reduction in the electricity bill.
For the sake of simplicity, Blikk looked at how much the German consumer pays for 2500 kWh of electricity per year. The prices vary from municipality to municipality and from service location to service location, so they looked at Stuttgart. According to the calculator, the monthly bill would be between EUR 98 and EUR 148. This corresponds to a monthly bill of around HUF 40-60,000 at today’s exchange rates.
In Hungary, the monthly bill for the same consumption is HUF 7750 – the monthly bill of the average consumer. Of course, it is much easier to pay HUF 40,000 a month from the average German salary than from the average Hungarian.
Gas
Average gas consumption in Hungary is 1729 cubic metres/year, or 144 cubic metres per month. Therefore, one pays HUF 16,048 (EUR 40.32) per month, which is HUF 192,576 (EUR 483.86) per year.
In Germany, several energy suppliers are also competing for consumers on the gas front. Blikk looked at what the offer would be for a new customer in Stuttgart for an average annual consumption of 1729 cubic metres, which is the average consumption in Hungary.
Some mathematics had to be done because you don’t enter a cubic metre, but the value of a cubic metre of gas converted into heating capacity, which, in this case, is 18,241 kWh per year. Then it became clear that, although electricity is much more expensive in Germany – about the same as it will be for us, fortunately only above average consumption – gas is even more expensive.
The cheaper offer would cost HUF 1,719,000 (EUR 4319.64) per year, which would be a “flat” monthly gas bill of HUF 143,000 (EUR 359.3), both in winter and summer. The more expensive offer would almost be an annual bill of HUF 2 million.

I’m a “Francised” Fidesz supporter – becoming very disillusioned – by the way our Government, sending us into a mess.
Worry – the widening of the mess, going to badly damage us – all of us.
Bad times ahead.
I always said that the government election pledge to keep energy prices at the current levels was unsustainable. Another election lie.
Highest inflation, highest VAT, election bribes, lies. This corrupt government has screwed the country over. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Sucking up to Putin hasn’t worked. A dictator will do anything to stay in power.
